Today we are going to take a look at the Xiaomi’s latest flagship device which is the Mi Mix 3 and if you are not familiar with this particular model lineup them let must just give a bit of background. The first iteration of this phone came out back in 2016, way before 18 by 9 aspect ratio was a thing and became the pioneer for today’s all screen smartphones.
Although it did have a bit of chin which was used to house the front camera which means if you love taking selfies it was a pretty weird angle, you gotta flip over the phone to make sure that you get the right angle for your selfies. This is something that they really address this time around because of that pop up camera or should I say slide down feature.
So with that said let’s talk about as to why you should check out their latest flagship device. We were able to spend about an hour or two with the Xiaomi Mix 3 so here’s our initial impression.
Design:
Right off the bat, we can tell you that Mi Mix 3 is a really good looking smartphone. It maintains that ceramic back that was used in past iterations of this phone that really
gives you that premium look and feel. The ergonomics are great it feels really
good in the hand.
Now the dimensions are pretty much the same as the Mi Mix 2S, it is just slightly thicker and slightly heavier but not so much so that it will become cumbersome. This phone is definitely gonna draw a lot of comparison to the Oppo find X because of that slide down or pop up mechanism to reveal the front facing camera setup.
We kind of like Xiaomi’s implementation of this particular feature since the Oppo Find X features a motorized mechanism. The more moving parts you have the more concerned and careful you should be as you never know when one bad job could send that motor
going haywire.
Xiaomi has come up with an impressive approach here done, it is a bit of a throwback to the time when cellphones use to feature this slide up mechanism to reveal the keypad. The same is with this device it uses magnets and is supposed to be rated for 300,000 actuation which if you do quick math is about 273 times a day over the course of three years. Now I’m not sure how often you take a selfie on your smartphone but I am guessing that it is more than enough to get you through a couple of years.
Specifications:
Moving on to the specs of the device, you have a 6.3 inch Full HD plus Super AMOLED panel so content consumption on this device will definitely be a blast. Now for its processor, you have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and since this is a flagship device you get only the best speaking of which you get up to 10 Gigabytes of RAM so that’s a lot of RAM for playing games and multitasking and whatnot.
You can expect the performance on this smartphone to be really really awesome that’s something that we’ll be able to test out for you in the future when they do send us a review unit. The unit we had our hands on was actually running on the Chinese ROM and not a global one so we were not able to run any kind of benchmarks.
Camera:
In terms of the cameras on the back you have two 12 megapixel shooters and for taking selfies you have a 24 megapixel main camera that is paired up with a 2 megapixel depth sensor for that really creamy bokeh effect.
When it comes to image quality they have really up their game with a Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, it received 103 on the DXOmark scale which is really impressive and shows that they have leveled up their photography game. The photos look great thanks to good dynamic range, contrast level, and saturation.
Software:
The phone runs on Android Oreo 8.1 with of course a Miui 9 it’s unclear whether or not they’re going to get the Android Pi update but we’re pretty sure that it will. The user experience was pretty smooth and snappy there was no lag at all. Although, I prefer stock Android without any skin on top of it but that is not much of an issue as you can always install Google Launcher.
Battery:
Juicing up the phone is a 3,200mAh battery which will easily get you through the day with some juice left. Plus you will also get a wireless charger straight out of the box which is really impressive.
Early Verdict:
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is a really unique device and offers an interesting solution to the notch problem, we might see more smartphone manufacturers implementing the same mechanism for their devices in the future. Also, this device offers all the top of the lines specs and still won’t cost you a fortune. All in all, it is a pretty great device and is worth checking out.
