One dead and five injured in a clash at Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan, Pakistan.
A Mass Communication student, named Mardan was shot dead at Abdul Wali Khan University (AWKU), Mardan on Thursday after being accused of blasphemy. He was a resident of Swabi and currently being enrolled at the university.
This event took place in the afternoon when a mob of students shot Mardan in the head and chest. The agitated crowd desecrated his body with sticks. Five other students were also injured before the police bring the situation under control.
Following the event, the dead body of deceased was shifted to District Headquarters Hospital. According to latest reports, his body will undergo post mortem.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Mardan Alam Shinwari said that the student was accused of running social media pages which allegedly published blasphemous content.
According to the statement of an eyewitness, Mashal, and Abdullah, two Mass Communication students were believed to be promoting the Ahmadi faith on Facebook. As a response, a mob of university students surrounded Abdullah in a room and forced him to recite verses from the Holy Quran. Despite this, they lynched him using the broad wooden board.
“He was assaulted by a group of students and appears to have succumbed to a gunshot wound,” the DIG said.
Police have not yet registered the case of an incident. They have arrested 20 people in relation to the murder probe.
University administration, Assistant Registrar Ashoor Khan has decided and issued a notice to shut down the university’s Garden Campus for an indefinite time period until further notice. The hostels have also been evacuated to avoid a further violation.
