People on different consoles might be able to play Fortnite with each other very soon. Epic games recently announced smartphone versions of the game which would have cross-play enabled for PC, Ps4, and Mac. However, there is no mention of Xbox One support but if Microsoft has their way, we can soon see Ps4 vs Xbox One on Fortnite.

Fortnite is one of the hottest games around right now. Its main appeal is its fun and interactive Battle Royale game mode which supports up to a 100 players. Furthermore, the game is absolutely free and you don’t even need an online subscription to play online if you own a Ps4 or Xbox One. Given the success of the game, the game makers are now introducing new modes to the game as well as introducing the game to different platforms. Only recently the announcement was made regarding smartphones also getting a version of the game.

Cross-play has also been a widely discussed topic amongst gamers from all platforms. There are many people who can’t play with each other because they have a different platform. Many people prefer PC, whereas other people prefer different consoles. Microsoft has been open to the idea of cross-play as well. In 2016, they announced that they were ready to make it happen if Sony were to agree. However, Sony isn’t as keen on the idea as Microsoft is, thus, cross-play between the two rival brands hasn’t been possible up till now.

Now that Fortnite will be available on multiple platforms, it was also announced that there would be cross-play between all platforms but the Xbox One. People can pick up their progress from where they left off on their Ps4 on their phones and vice versa. People playing on PC or phones can also play with people on the Ps4. Only the Xbox players are left now.

“We have been working closely with the team at Epic Games for some time to bring this functionality to all current and future versions of Fortnite and expect it to be available on Xbox along with other platforms,” says a Microsoft spokesperson. “Microsoft has long been a leading voice in encouraging the adoption of cross-platform play and the potential of connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles.”

Indeed, Microsoft is already working to unite PC and Xbox gamers as it offers PC and Xbox gamers to purchase a game only with one account, giving them access to the game on both platforms through the account. According to Phil Spencer, the man in charge of Xbox, he wants people to play with each other on machines that they prefer, so one does not need to feel forced to buy a console/PC just because their friends play on that particular machine.
Now, whether Microsoft is able to get cross-play between Ps4 and Xbox One is another thing. But, it’s likely that Microsoft will get cross-support for other platforms with the Xbox at the very least. The best thing about cross-play is that cross-play matchmaking will be voluntary, you can easily opt out. This is done because many people argue and complain that certain gamers, for example, the PC gamers have an advantage over console gamers in games like Fortnite. Therefore, to make an experience that everyone enjoys without complaint, the opt-in feature is great.
Microsoft is in the good books of many other companies as there is also cross-play support between the Xbox and the Nintendo Switch. Even though Sony has refused to work with Microsoft before with games such as Rocket league, it seems that this time things will be different. We might finally get cross-play between Xbox and PlayStation and a popular game like Fortnite could be great for testing out any technicalities thus paving the way for future cross-platform games.
