With the launch of the next generation of consoles, we begin the shift towards newer horizons. Clinking with all sorts of bells and whistles, the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 are practically flying off shelves worldwide. But the question for most people isn’t which console to buy. Rather, it’s what to do with the older gen they already have.
If you bought a PS4 Pro, chances are, you aren’t feeling like forking out a few hundred bucks just to push framerates up slightly. Since most games released over the next three years will be cross-generational, you won’t even miss out on much. And you probably are making the right decision in holding off that PS5 order till next year.
If you want the very best your console can offer, then consider jailbreaking your PS4 Pro. If that term threw you off, don’t worry- we’re pretty good at explaining things here. But if you’re a veteran modding expert, then skip ahead to where we give tips on how to Jailbreak the PS4 Pro. Regardless of how experienced you are, take a look down below as we unravel the mysteries of Sony’s mid-gen masterpiece.
Essentially, jailbreaking means loosening security restrictions on a console to use however you like. When we’re talking about security, we mean the restrictions manufacturers place upon their products to prevent all its features from being used. This has absolutely nothing to do with antivirus systems or protecting your device online.
Securities manufacturers might place on video game consoles, like the PS4 Pro, varies. Some of it is actually to protect consoles from being tampered with before sale. However, the biggest inconvenience users face is the inability to run third party software on their devices. This means you can’t run any programs besides the few that are allowed. This is why the Nintendo Switch, which is basically a gaming tablet, cannot run YouTube or any social media apps.
Jailbreaking your PS4 Pro is just rolling back some of these unnecessary restrictions to allow for more compatibility. For example, via jailbreaking, people have made a dedicated internet browser app for the Nintendo Switch. Moreover, you can even use jailbreaking to download games you own. As long as you own the game, this is not illegal in any form unless you try to sell the jailbroken console.
Some things to know before you start modding your PS4 Pro
Modifying the software of your console is a bit like doing surgery on it. Unless you’re careful, there are plenty of ways to mess things up. So our first tip for you is to back up your console’s data. You can find this option in the menus. Simply insert a compatible memory drive and transfer all your important data onto the disk. This way, if things go wrong, we can always reset the console back to the way it was before.
The second tip of the day is that you can only modify consoles that aren’t on the latest operating systems. It takes time to bypass the security systems of consoles, and often the manufacturers release updates that reverse all the work you’ve put into modding. If you’re thinking of jailbreaking your PS4 Pro, you need to be on operating system 5.05 or 5.07 or lower. At the time of writing, nobody has managed to crack the code for newer operating systems.
The third bit of advice is more of a reminder, actually. Being on an older OS than everyone else will mean you cannot play games online. So if you play a lot of online multiplayer, like the new Call of Duty: Warzone, then this isn’t a good choice for you.
The jailbreaking process
Now that we’ve gotten all the disclaimers out of the way, let’s start talking business. As far as the process of jailbreak goes, it isn’t an extremely difficult thing to do. The whole thing is something you need to make a second habit, though. Tip number four explains why: every time you reboot the console, you’ll need to apply the jailbreak again. However, it only takes a while the first time around, so don’t worry.
When you’re ready to start the jailbreak for your PS4 Pro, head down to this link to grab the jailbreak software.
Step 1: Download the right software for PS4 Pro Jailbreak
Please open the link provided above on a laptop or PC. On the website provided, you might see software versions beyond 5.07, which was our limit. Do not download these versions. We cannot guarantee they will work without a hitch on the PS4 Pro, which comes with updated security systems. These newer versions are intended for the PS4 alone, and may not be compatible with its younger sibling.
However, if you feel like you know your way around security systems, then go right ahead. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you if anything goes awry.
Step 2: Extract the files you’ve just downloaded
In case you’re unfamiliar with file extraction, just download WinRAR. It is a free, easy to use program that will handle everything for you. Once the files are extracted, you will be notified, and we can advance to the next step.
Step 3: Transfer the downloaded files to a USB device of at least 1 GB storage and USB 3.0 or above
Due to restrictions, your device will likely not communicate or allow file transfer if the USB you use is below the above specifications. Also, feel free to download any programs you’d like to run on your PS4 Pro. This could include apps and more.
Plug the USB drive into your PC or laptop, transfer the jailbreak software for PS4 Pro to the device, and remove it.
Step 4: Plug the USB into your PS4 Pro via its ports
Power off the console if it is on. Insert the USB device into the PS4 Pro and allow it to sit in the port for a few seconds. Next, turn on the console and wait.
Step 5: Update via a storage device
After the console boots up fully, head on over to the settings and choose the option to update the console via USB. This will begin installing the program you downloaded onto your PS4 Pro. It should take up to twenty minutes or so.
Step 6: Download games, apps, and enjoy
By this point, the console should be running your custom firmware. This means you’re all set to download games from the internet, to add apps to your console, and more. The true power of your PS4 Pro is now at your fingertips.
