Sony has been teasing big announcements at the State of Play presentation for some time now. Sony State of Play is a Nintendo Direct or Inside Xbox styled episodic presentation by Sony. There were rumours of new game announcements and additional updates. Well, the presentation just ended and we have some new games headed to the PS4 this year. Let’s look at what’s coming to PlayStation!
Marvel’s Iron Man VR
Probably the biggest announcement to come out of the presentation was of the Iron Man game. Sony kicked off State of Play with a trailer for the game. Called Marvel’s Iron Man VR, the PlayStation VR game lets players take control of the badass Avenger, Iron Man. Players would be able to fly through the clouds and shoot down the bad guys in VR which sounds pretty awesome. Friday, who became Iron Man’s assistant after Jarvis evolved into Vision can also be seen supporting Iron Man during missions in the trailer.
Marvel’s Iron Man VR is supposed to be a fully playable VR only experience. This means that the entire game will be played in first person by the players including all the cutscenes. As far as the combat is concerned, players can expect to have some pretty intense mid-air fights with melee and repulse blasts. In a blog post, the developer Camouflaj stated that they are trying to capture the spirit of Iron Man. The game will be authentic and will be “a deeply personal, and appropriately funny, narrative. They also gave hints about the story by stating that in Iron Man VR, Tony will confront “ghosts from his past”.
Iron Man VR looks set to be a solid game for PSVR and will definitely help the platform. The game is scheduled for release later this year. However, at this time, there is no confirmation if the Iron Man VR is a PlayStation exclusive.
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
We all loved playing Crash Team Racing on our old PlayStation 1 systems. If you’re one of those people, there’s some very good news for you. Get ready to dive deep into the abyss of nostalgia and remember the good old days as the remaster for Crash Team Racing was also announced at State of Play. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a full remaster, just like the original Crash Bandicoot remaster. The game will also have some exclusive PS1-styled skins along with old tracks and karts. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is going to launch on June 21, 2019.
No Man’s Sky VR
No Man’s Sky has been getting some pretty big updates lately. With the new No Man’s Sky Beyond announced, the game has finally started to fulfill its massive potential. However, Beyond is not the only update coming to the game. During State of Play, PSVR support was announced for No Man’s Sky by Hello Games. This means that players will be able to scale through massive galaxies and explore planets entirely in VR. The VR mode is also seamlessly integrated with the base game and it wouldn’t be a separate game mode. In addition to that, No Man’s Sky: Beyond will also be getting a physical disc version on the PS4. This will come with the original game, VR support, and all the updates that come for Beyond.
Hello Games hopes to invite newer players into this game by offering a newer physical version. However, the game could also be a potential product seller for PSVR as games like Elite Dangerous have already served as catalysts for sales of other VR headsets.
Five Nights at Freddy’s VR
Sony’s VR spree continues for State of Play with Five Nights at Freddy’s VR. Five Nights at Freddy’s is a fan favourite game that has become a staple of horror games. The critically acclaimed game was originally released way back in 2014. Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted is a VR version of the original game and will arrive on PSVR (and other VR headsets) next month.
ReadySet Heroes
If local party multiplayer games are your thing, then ReadySet Heroes is right down your alley. It is a four-player multiplayer isometric dungeon crawler. The game puts players against another team in a blood filled race through the monster dungeon. At the end of the dungeon, the teams face off in a final showdown. ReadySet Heroes is scheduled for release on the PS4 later this year.
Concrete Genie
The much-anticipated PS4 exclusive action adventure game Concrete Genie also got a release window and a new story trailer. Concrete Genie is a very peculiar and imaginative game that focuses on bullying. The protagonist, Ash, has the ability to paint images on the walls and bring those paintings to life. These paintings allow him to solve puzzles and also serve as trusty companions. The game is scheduled to come out this fall on the PS4.
Days Gone
One of the most anticipated PS4 exclusives, Days Gone is only a month away from release. The zombie survival game got a new trailer that sheds some more light on the game’s story. Days Gone comes out on the PS4 next month, on April 26.
Mortal Kombat 11
The final announcement of State of Play was a new trailer for the eleventh and the latest entry in the Mortal Kombat series. The trailer showed three characters returning to the game: Lui Kang, Kung Lao and Jax. In addition to that, the trailer also showcased the newer modern-day characters encountering their younger selves from the past. Mortal Kombat 11 comes out next month on April 23.
Conclusion:
Sony’s State of Play might have felt underwhelming to a lot of people. However, we do need to remember that we can’t expect new AAA announcements at presentations like this. We saw some very solid announcements for PSVR and the platform looks like it has a decent library of games now. However, if you were waiting for news about The Last of Us 2 or other anticipated exclusive games, you’d have to wait until Sony’s show near E3 in June.
