Mumbai-based sports media platform Nazara Technologies has announced its plans to acquire Comic Con India in a Rs 55 crore-deal. The acquisition, which will be carried out through its subsidiary NODWIN Gaming, will see Nazara acquire 100 per cent of Comic Con India’s shares at a valuation of Rs 55 crore, through a combination of cash and share swap deal. In a regulatory filing, Nazara also revealed that the founders of Comic Con India, Jatin Varma and Karan Kalra, will continue to operate the business as part of NODWIN Gaming.
The move comes as the e-sports sector continues to gain mainstream attention, with the gaming industry pivoting to create opportunities for tournaments and events. Nazara’s acquisition of Comic Con India also merges gaming with comics, as part of the larger Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) sector. The company stated that the acquisition will diversify NODWIN Gaming’s youth portfolio and mark a strategic expansion in the global entertainment landscape.
Akshat Rathee, co-founder and Managing Director of NODWIN Gaming, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating that the integration of Comic Con India will amplify and diversify the company’s offerings to target the youth in India. He added that the acquisition will add a robust intellectual property that combines gaming, pop culture, and esports into one interactive entertainment sector, which is scalable in India and abroad.
In addition to organising festivals across India to celebrate popular culture elements like comics, cosplay, movies, TV shows, merchandise, and gaming, Comic Con India has also attracted increased interest from celebrities and fans alike. The founders of Comic Con India, Jatin Varma and Karan Kalra, expressed their dedication to building a unique space in India for promoting and celebrating popular culture.
Opinion: The acquisition of Comic Con India by Nazara Technologies represents a significant development in the AVGC sector, as it brings together two distinct but complementary areas of entertainment. This strategic partnership has the potential to expand the reach of both companies and create new and exciting opportunities for fans of gaming, comics, and popular culture.
