It seems like Activision might also be looking to adopt the red-hot Battle Royale mode in its latest Call Of Duty game. Reports have surfaced that the latest installment of the COD franchise: Black Ops4 will also feature a Battle Royale mode similar to that of PUBG and Fortnite.
PUBG and Fortnite are the two most popular online multiplayer games right now. It started with PUBG, who introduced the Battle Royale mode. Players fight in a free for all, last man standing type of match where players can pick up weapons along the way. Each player starts out with nothing thus not only making it a game of skill but tactics too. Both Fortnite and PUBG have gained huge success thanks to this unique game mode and more and more games now look to adopt it as well due to its immense popularity.
Call Of Duty, on the other hand, has always been a mix of single player and multiplayer. However, the multiplayer aspect has appealed more to the COD fanbase, especially over the past few years. Therefore, it’s not hard to see why Activision is trying to transition away from single player into more a more co-op and multiplayer driven game as they tested the waters with Call Of Duty: Black Ops3.
As already mentioned, most of the game’s popularity comes through its multiplayer experience. COD generally offers a variety of game modes including the classic Team Deathmatch, Free For all, Gungame and Search and Destroy. Upon every installment, they try to come up with a new game mode too to add more variety. For example, they added game modes like ‘WAR’ in Call Of Duty: WWII. However, now it seems they’re looking to add the Battle Royale game mode too. It’s great news for fans of the game mode, but there’s concern as to how this will work.
COD already has a Free For All game mode but players can keep on respawning. Similarly, if you want an aspect of progressively improving, then Gun Game offers that, however, it contains a set of guns that you upgrade from upon each kill that’s the same for everyone and again, you can respawn. Therefore, there is room for the Battle Royale game mode in COD. However, given the nature of the game, it’s highly unlikely that people will be breaking walls or cutting trees to gather materials, nor will they be using a frying pan as a weapon.
Therefore, it’ll be interesting to see how Call Of Duty implements the highly popular game mode if they choose to do so. It most likely won’t be the same as the one that you see in PUBG and Fortnite, but a Battle Royale with a Call of Duty twist to it. It remains to be seen what Activision really has in store for us.
Apart from the Battle Royale mode, there are also reports which say that Activision is ditching the concept of single player entirely and opting for a multiplayer-only game with Black Ops4. The report came from two sources who talked to Kotaku, who is usually right about these things most of the time. If this turns out to be true, then there might be some serious fan backlash because even though most of the COD fanbase purchases COD for the multiplayer, a large chunk also like to play solo, and prefer a good story campaign as well.
There are many people who opt against purchasing a multiplayer subscription such as PS Plus or Xbox Live which is required in order to play online. A lot of people won’t be able to play Call of Duty if these changes are made. However, until there’s the official word from Activision, there’s still hope for everyone. Everything will be confirmed once they officially unveil the game on May 17th, so not long to go now.
