Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, alongside it’s battle royale companion Call of Duty: Warzone, is arguably on it’s way to the hall of fame of first person shooter games. With its robust gameplay mechanics and a newer approach to the franchise, the latest entry in the franchise has won the hearts of old and new fans alike.
One of the biggest reasons for the success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone is the deviation from the usual Call of Duty formula and going back to the roots of what made the franchise so great in the first place. Additionally, the game also introduces much darker undertones to both the campaign and multiplayer, making it a perfect fit for the modern day.
The free to play standalone Battle Royale game mode, Call of Duty: Warzone has managed to gather even more fame and stardom than the base game. This is due to the fact that the game is free and it also introduces some very innovative features to the Battle Royale genre.
For instance, the game starts with 150 players instead of the usual 100 and the inclusion of second chance mechanics like the self-revive and the gulag has also made the game a lot less frustrating overall. Additionally, there’s tons of variety on the massive map itself ranging from tall accessible skyscrapers to sprawling open spaces.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone have also done a brilliant job of introducing new weapons regularly to keep the meta fresh. Furthermore, the existence of custom loadouts within battle royale definitely makes it easier to adapt to the game for newer players.

However, despite all of the great things that the game manages to pull off very well, it has an inherent issue that keeps popping up almost every other week. The update delivery system for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone is janky at best and can prove to be game breaking at times.
Every single week, Infinity Ward pushes out a new update that’s gigantic in size and usually, ends up with a game-breaking error that usually relates to the files not being downloaded properly. Earlier, it was the ‘Missing Multiplayer DLC Packs’ error that was plaguing users across all platforms (check out how to fix that here) and now, another similar issue has spawned in after the last update.
Users on Twitter and Reddit have reported that after downloading the latest update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the game just straight up refuses access to Multiplayer mode with an error stating ‘Install Suspended‘.
Once you select the OK option on that error, it prompts the user that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Warzone is ‘Fetching game installs’. However, this prompt seems to never go away until you back out of it eventually.
So, why are you getting this error? Well, the ‘Install Suspended’ error in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone is actually very similar to the Missing Multiplayer DLC packs one, meaning that there’s a part of the game missing from your system which could be anything from DLC to other add-ons.
How to fix performance issues in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/Warzone
Thankfully though, the solution to the problem is not very complicated and takes only a few minutes to fix. So, until Activision officially addresses the ‘Install Suspended’ problem on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone, here are a couple of things that you can try to fix your woes.
1. Restore game licenses to fix ‘Install Suspended’ error in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone
With each new update, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (and Warzone) gets a bunch of new things added to the game. these can range from cosmetics to new guns to entire new characters, like the one introduced in Season 3.
Sometimes, due to the way Call of Duty updates are designed, the download can get botched in the process resulting in these files not being downloaded properly. This either results in your game having to redownload or it just stops you from accessing said files and add-ons.
However, the real issue is that the multiplayer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare cannot be accessed without these add-ons so, what you can try to do is restoring the licenses for these add-ons to solve your ‘Install Suspended’ issue.
Thankfully, the restoration of licenses is not as complicated as it sounds and can be done pretty easily on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Just follow the instructions given below.
PlayStation 4:
In case you’re having the ‘Install Suspended’ issue in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Warzone on the PlayStation 4, your best bet would be to restore the licenses to all of the game’s add-ons and then redownload them. In order to do that, just follow these steps:
- Go over to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on the dashboard of your PlayStation 4 console and press the options (start) button of your controller to open the game menu.
- Scroll down for a bit and then select the Information option.
- Choose the View button which is located next to the ‘Installed add-ons’ option.
- This will open up a list of all the add-ons for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that you have installed on your PlayStation 4. Here, you need to check that all of them are installed and whether they have a padlock symbol next to them or not. Here’s a list of required add-ons:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Multiplayer Pack
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Campaign Pack 1
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Campaign Pack 2
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Spec Ops Pack
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Spec Ops Pack 2
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Survival Pack
- In case you’re missing some add-ons, you’ll have to download them from the PSN Store manually. You can just for them within the PSN Store and download them.
- If the downloaded add-ons have a padlock symbol next to them instead, this means that you’re going to have to restore their licenses. So, close the menu and go back to the main dashboard.
- To restore licenses for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/Warzone add-ons, go into the settings of your PlayStation 4 console and open the ‘Account Management’ menu.
- Select the ‘Restore Licenses’ option to start the restoration process.
Now, your PlayStation 4 will restore the licenses to all the DLC and add-ons that are currently installed on the console and once that’s done, you should be able to hop back into your game and play without any problems.
However, if you’re still experiencing the ‘Install Suspended’ error in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare after restoring the licenses, don’t worry since there is another way to bypass the problem that we have discussed down below. So, you don’t have to delete and reinstall your game just yet.
Xbox One:
Game licenses on the Xbox One console are a bit different from the PlayStation 4. If you’re having the ‘Install Suspended’ issue on an Xbox One console, there actually isn’t a way for you to restore your licenses as we saw on the PlayStation 4 per se.
However, you can still try to download the missing add-ons and DLC packs which will hopefully fix your ‘Install Suspended’ error in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
Here’s how to download the missing add-ons on an Xbox One console:
- From either the main dashboard or by pressing the Xbox button on your controller, open your Games and Apps library.
- Within the Games tab, go to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Warzone and press the start/menu button on your controller to bring up the settings for the game.
- Select the ‘Manage game and add-ons’ options and once you’re in, you’ll see a list of all the add-ons for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Warzone that are currently installed on your Xbox One console. Go through the list and make sure that all of them are indeed installed. Here’s what it should look like:
-
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Multiplayer Pack
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Spec Ops Pack 1
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Campaign Pack 1
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Campaign Pack 2
-
- If you don’t have all of these add-ons installed on your console, you’ll have to download them manually. To do that, go into the Xbox Store and type their name within the search bar and simply download them.
After you’ve managed to successfully download and install all of the missing add-ons for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/Warzone on your Xbox One, you should be good to go and the ‘Install Suspended’ issue should be resolved. However, if you’re still getting the error and were unable to download the add-ons, check out the second method down below.
2. Create an account for a different region
If you’re reading this, chances are that restoring all those licenses for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/Warzone didn’t really work. So, if that didn’t fix your ‘Install Suspended’ issue within Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, this surely will.
Most games on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are not bound by any region and can be played on an account for any region. However, if you want to purchase and download any DLC or additional content for your game, then you can only do it if your PSN or Xbox Live account matches the region of the said game.
Usually, that doesn’t pose any problems since most people don’t really buy an DLC for games so they never have to encounter that problem. However, since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare comes with a lot of free add-ons that are necessary for you to play the game, this can cause some issues as a region discrepancy can arise.
The best drop zones in Call of Duty: Warzone
While these issues are usually tied to physical copies of games since different regions can be available for purchase in a country, they can also arise on digital games as well if the user has purchased the game on a different PSN or Xbox Live account.
So, you need to make sure that the account that you’re trying to play the game from is actually the same as the region for the game.
Additionally, the region of your Activision account being different can also cause the issue of region mismatch which can eventually lead to errors such as ‘Install Suspended’ in games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
So, in order to fix the region mismatch problem and download the missing add-ons, follow these steps:
- Check the region of the game and see that whether it matches with the region of your PSN or Xbox Live account or not. On physical copies of the game, you can find the region number on the backside of the box next to a little world icon.
To check the region of your account, you can either check Account Information in settings or see which store your account is tied to. For instance, if your account is tied to the US store, then your region is the US as well. - If the region of the game does not match with the region of your account, you’ll have to make a new account just to download the missing add-ons for your game.
- In order to create a new account, log out of your current account on your console and head over to the login screen. Now, choose the add user/sign up option rather than the sign in option you would usually select. After that, your console will guide you through the process of making a new account. Just make sure to set the same region for the account as your game.
- You should also create another Activision account on the same region just in case, as a precautionary measure. In order to do that, head over to the Activision website right here.
- Once you have made the new account for the region of your game, launch it. The ‘Install Suspended’ error will still pop up in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare but this time around, you’ll actually be able to navigate over to the PSN or the Xbox Store and download the add-ons that you were missing earlier.
- Simply download those missing add-ons now and wait for them to get installed. Once they’ve been installed, launch the game and hopefully, you’ll be able to access your game this time around.
- Now, you can sign back into your old account and play the game normally with all of your progress.
One of these two methods should have hopefully worked for you and fixed the ‘Install Suspended’ error in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/ Warzone. However, if the error still persists even after trying everything then you might just have to delete the entire game and redownload it.
In case you can’t access the game even after downloading it again, you’ll have to contact the official support channels.
