Game of Thrones fans rejoice! Reported by Deadline, HBO has ordered a prequel show pilot from Jane Goldman in collaboration with George R.R. Martin. With the series itself set to end in 2019, the show can still live on.
Game of Thrones is perhaps one of the most popular shows on TV and it always creates a lot of buzz amongst its fans whenever a new season comes out.
However, fans are left with bittersweet feelings as the show comes back once again in 2019 but the latest season would be the last in the series. A prequel series might make die-hard fans of GoT happy, but they shouldn’t expect any of their favorite characters to show up because the prequels are going to be set thousands of years before the events that took place in the main series.
The prequel series isn’t the only one HBO plans to work on in the near future. A year ago, HBO stated that there could be four different shows that could stem from the Game of Thrones universe with George R.R. Martin saying that number could even go up to 5. As far as the number of prequel series we’re getting, HBO President Casey Bloys said that there could be “anywhere from zero to five but probably more likely around one” prequel series. The number depends but it may be very possible that the current pilot that’s under development may be the only prequel series for Game of Thrones.
However, that doesn’t mean that they won’t be able to do other things. HBO clearly has a lot of ideas in mind when it comes to Game of Thrones otherwise they wouldn’t have made the four shows statement. They could do spinoffs or make series about origins of some characters or about some of the mysterious things in Game of Thrones, there is a lot of potential here.
“The series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend … it’s not the story we think we know,” says HBO.
Whether we’ll also get confirmation regarding the development of series other than the prequel or we don’t get them at all remains to be seen. However, as far as the prequel series is concerned, fans can get excited about another George R.R. Martin masterpiece.
