In a groundbreaking move for the gaming industry, Bethesda Game Studios has become the first Microsoft game developer to unionize under the Communication Workers of America (CWA). This “wall-to-wall” union includes a diverse group of developers, ranging from artists to engineers, programmers, and designers. Microsoft has officially recognized the union, marking a significant step forward for labor rights within the gaming world.

The decision to unionize came after 241 developers at Bethesda Game Studios either signed a union authorization card or expressed their desire for unionization through an online portal. This follows the unionization of Bethesda Games Studios Montreal and roughly 300 quality assurance workers within Zenimax, Bethesda’s parent company.

The newly formed union, known as #OneBGSUSA, has expressed their excitement and commitment to advocating for the betterment of every developer at Bethesda Game Studios Dallas, Rockville, and Austin. The group took to Twitter to announce their union and their intention to set a new standard for the industry.

Moving forward, the union will engage in negotiations with Microsoft to establish a fair contract. This process will be crucial in determining the working conditions and rights of the developers within Bethesda Game Studios. Senior system designer Mandi Parker emphasized the importance of democracy in the workplace and the power of unity in shaping working conditions and overall company culture.

Unionization has been gaining momentum within the gaming industry as workers seek protection against mass layoffs and better working conditions. Sega of America and Activision’s QA workers have also ratified union contracts, signaling a shift towards more organized labor within the industry. Microsoft’s willingness to recognize and engage with unions, including potentially at Activision Blizzard, demonstrates a shift towards greater labor rights within the gaming world.

The announcement of Bethesda Game Studios’ unionization is a significant milestone for the gaming industry and a testament to the power of collective action. As developers come together to advocate for their rights and working conditions, the industry as a whole stands to benefit from greater stability and fairness. It is clear that the voice of workers is a powerful force for change within the gaming world.
