The latest trends in streaming have revealed some interesting insights into the viewing habits of Indians in 2023. According to Amazon’s Fire TV Streaming Trends Report, it was found that Indians spent more hours streaming cricket than entertainment content, especially during domestic and international cricket tournaments. The states where cricket viewership peaked the most were Maharashtra, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. This surge in cricket streaming can be attributed to India’s World Cup run in 2022, which captured the hearts of fans across the country.
In addition to cricket, Indian households spent around four hours a day streaming movies, shows, cricket matches, as well as playing games and listening to music through Fire TV. The report also highlighted that there was a yearly increase of 23 per cent in streaming hours for ad-run platforms like YouTube, miniTV, and MX Player. Moreover, viewership patterns on Fire TV also showed a significant increase in streaming hours for F1 races and children’s apps.
One interesting trend that emerged from the report was the preference for voice search, with about 80 per cent of Fire TV users using Alexa to search for their favorite content across 12,000 apps. The report also revealed that the Fire TV device has achieved a geographical penetration of over 99 per cent, reaching users in remote locations such as Kavaratti in Lakshadweep and Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar.
In terms of opinion, some may argue that the increasing trend of streaming cricket over entertainment content reflects the deep-rooted love for the sport in India. It also showcases the ability of streaming platforms to cater to the diverse interests of their audience, from sports enthusiasts to movie buffs and music lovers. Additionally, the rise in viewership for ad-run platforms and the preference for voice search indicates a growing reliance on streaming as a primary source of entertainment. Overall, the data from the report provides valuable insights into the evolving streaming habits of Indians and the increasing role of streaming platforms in shaping their entertainment choices.
