In simple words, smart delivery means that you only need to buy a game once. For every console, you get you will enjoy the best game version available on the hardware.
For instance, if you buy the upcoming game Halo Infinite on Xbox One currently. You will be able to play it on Xbox Series X or S when you upgrade without rebuying it. However, game repurchase is not the only issue when upgrading consoles. Microsoft has also enabled cloud saves. This means that you save data will also be compatible with future consoles. This makes the upgrades more streamlined as players can pick up right where they left off. The cross-generation compatibility feature will come with most of the game releases next year. Microsoft currently promises smart delivery on all of its upcoming Xbox Game studio titles.
In addition to Microsoft’s own games, CD Projekt Red has also announced Smart Delivery for their upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077. This leaves a lot of console players to question what Sony did with their PlayStation. Sony is currently selling games separately for the PS4 and PS5 because of their own reasons. More on that here.
The Games:
A lot of AAA game titles have confirmed support for Smart Delivery. After their Inside Xbox stream and next-gen gameplay reveal events a lot of game developers announced this purchase model. This gives players all the more incentive to buy never consoles without needing to worry about their games. Some of the games currently in the line include the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Marvel’s Avengers, and Watch Dogs Legion.
According to Microsoft smart delivery ensures that you “buy a game once and know that – whether you are playing it on Xbox One or Xbox Series X – you are getting the right version of that game on whatever Xbox you’re playing on.”
Microsoft said that they will use this feature for quite a while in the future. they said that Halo Infinite is one of the first games to come with this technology. Not only does this means better upgrades it also improved back compatibility. You can now buy Halo for the sever year old Xbox One and still get the best variant once you upgrade to Xbox series X. Smart delivery in a way futureproofs your purchase. You do not need to play a lighter version of your games anymore on the newer models with backward compatibility.
Every single game purchase from now on on the Xbox platform will promise full future compatibility. Microsoft has already promised Smart Delivery for their first-party games like Halo Infinite, Gears 5, Ori, and the Blind Forest. In addition, the technology will also be available to all the game publishers from now on. We can only hope that every big publisher chooses to implement it. Microsoft said those game developers can” choose to use it for titles that will be released on Xbox One first and come to the Xbox Series X later”.

Currently, Microsoft has not confirmed whether this feature applies only to digital releases or physical copies of the games as well. Microsoft will confirm this in the future.
Older titles from Xbox One like Gears 5, Gears Tactics, Sea of Thieves, Forza Horizon 4, and Ori and the Will of the Wisps are coming to the Series X with Smart delivery. We already talked about the third part support till now which includes Cyberpunk 2077, Assasins Creed: Valhalla, and Watch Dogs Legion.
While Smart delivery causes a lot of monetary losses for developers who sold older games on every new console. it does give players a lot of value. Stay tuned for more updates on the feature.
