On the 31st January press event, James Gunn and Peter Safran claimed that Superman; Legacy would set the distinctive perspective in the newly launched DC Universe, and both the CEOs of the DC universe are all set for the premiere on July 11, 2025. In addition, this film will initiate “Gods and Monsters,” Chapter 1 of the new DCU.
According to Gunn, the film is not about Superman’s beginnings but concentrates on his struggle to harmonize his Kryptonian heritage and human upbringing. In the US, this Superman depicts the core values of honesty, and equity and as a representation of kindness in a world that regards it as old-fashioned.
James Gunn added that they aim to move away from a typical good versus evil narrative, as many characters, including Superman, can be considered almost saintly. The studio gave James Gunn a chance as the scriptwriter, so he explored his interpretation of the DC universe. But the director for Superman: Legacy has yet to be announced. During the DCU announcement, James Gunn mentioned the possibility of directing the film, which serves as the starting point for the new universe. However, he also acknowledged that he might have too many other projects and only be able to write the latest version of Superman.
Similar to things that happened before in 2013 at the launch of Man of Steel, Gunn and Safran visioned reintroducing the character of Superman as it helped them to initiate their absolute way to the DC universe when the studio declared Superman as much essential.
After the conversation with James Gunn and Peter Safran, Henry Cavill disclosed that he would no longer be part of Superman Legacy. He expressed disappointment in a statement but emphasized that the ideals and beliefs that the character symbolizes will endure. He acknowledged that his time as the Man of Steel has ended but emphasized that the legacy of Superman as a symbol of hope and justice will continue to live. Despite sharing the news in December 2022, the studio has yet to reveal the identity of the next actor who will play Superman. In Superman, Gunn also gives clues to the audience that he tries to portray Clark kent as young and old enough to work at the Daily planet.
At the announcement event, Gunn mentioned that Superman was raised with love by his adoptive parents on Earth. In contrast, Supergirl’s upbringing was vastly different as she was initially from Krypton and witnessed death and suffering at a young age. Gunn explained that this makes her a more challenging and affected version of Supergirl compared to previous depictions.
A year ago, Tom King’s highly influential comic series made the studio declare a movie called “Super Girl; Women of Tomorrow. The statement in the press release indicated that the film would provide an unprecedented representation of Supergirl, one that viewers should get to know better. The studio characterizes “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” as a science fiction adventure movie showcasing Supergirl that departs from the conventional depiction known to audiences. According to James Gunn, the tone of the Supergirl movie will differ from that of Superman as the characters have distinct differences.
Gunn stated that the studio plans to leverage the popularity of characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman to introduce lesser-known characters, similar to what was done with the Guardians of the Galaxy. He used The Authority as an example, describing it as a fantastic movie concept strongly tied to Superman and how utilizing well-known properties can lead to less familiar ones.
According to Gunn, “Superman” is a movie for all audiences, meant to appeal to and resonate with people of all ages and backgrounds worldwide.
James Gunn stated that the PG-13 rating of the movie was based on the story’s content, and the narrative decided whether it would be live-action or animated. There are also stories aimed toward young women and children within the same world.
