With the release of the PS5, Sony created the PlayStation Plus Collection as a perk for PS Plus subscribers, including popular games. This benefit, available since the PS5’s November 2020 release, will soon come to an end. According to Sony, the PlayStation Plus Collection, including 20 games, will cease to exist on May 9th. Until that date, players can still obtain these games and retain access to them if they keep their PS Plus membership. The collection comprises 20 PS4 games, with an equal number of first-party and third-party developers. The PlayStation Plus Collection is only accessible to PS5 users who have a paid PS Plus membership. This feature provides an easy way for them to play some of the best games from the previous generation, and gives them access to a vast collection of games.
On May 9, the PlayStation Plus Collection, previously accessible to PS5 owners who subscribed to the PS Plus service, will no longer be available, according to VGC. When the feature was first introduced, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan, saw it as a way to retain players within the PS platform. In a talk with GQ, he stated that by purchasing a PS5, someone who never had a PS4 essentially receives one.
Jim Ryan stated that Sony’s main focus is on developing major first-party games, so a subscription service like Xbox Game Pass would not fit into their strategy. On Wednesday, the company officially revealed the February games that are part of the PlayStation Plus Essential package. The February lineup for the PlayStation Plus Essential program includes games such as OlliOlli World, Mafia Definitive Edition, Evil Dead: The Game, and Destiny 2: Beyond Light.
Sony has stated that they plan to increase the number of games in their PS Plus library and the continuously changing Games Catalog that come with the PS Plus Premium and Extra subscription. If you still need to take advantage of the games available in the PS Plus Library, there are still a few months left to download them. In the past year, Sony created two higher-level subscriptions for PlayStation Plus that give members access to an expansive and frequently updated library of games across various PlayStation generations. After May 9, Sony may have the opportunity to persuade new PS5 owners to sign up for either PS Plus Extra or Premium, who might not have thought of it.
The current lineup of the PS Plus Collection features games:
- Call of Duty Black Ops 3
- Battlefield 1
- Batman: Arkham Knight
- Final Fantasy XV
- Infamous Second Son
- Monster Hunter World
- Days Gone
- Fallout 4
- Monster Hunter World
- Uncharted 4 A thief’s end
- The Last Guardian
- Rachet & Clank
- God of War
- Final Fantasy XV
- Until Dawn
- Resident Evil 7 biohazard
- Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy
Until February 7th, players can claim the PS Plus Essential games for January, which are Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Fallout 76, and Axiom Verge 2. The Essential package is the simplest of the three PS Plus membership options and gives subscribers access to a limited selection of games each month as long as their subscription remains active. The PS Plus Collection is highly regarded among players and is a key feature of the PS5. Still, unfortunately, Sony is discontinuing it. As a result, PS Plus subscribers only have a limited time remaining to claim popular games such as Bloodborne and Resident Evil 7 before the carefully selected collection is permanently gone.
