Claim your Free Games before Sony Discontinues PlayStation Plus Collection

On May 9th, Sony will discontinue the PlayStation Plus Collection, which includes 19 games. However, players can still download these games until that date and still play them as long as they maintain their PS Plus membership.

Sony launched the PlayStation Plus Collection in late 2020 as part of the PS5 launch to attract consumers to the next-gen console due to a need for more exclusive launch titles. Despite not offering any explanation, Sony recently provided limited-time discounts on its PS Plus Extra and Deluxe/Premium subscriptions to persuade Essential plan subscribers to upgrade.

Additionally, Jim Ryan, the CEO of PlayStation, declared last month that the shortage in PS5 supply had been resolved. Given the expanding library of exclusive games for the console,  it may be okay for the company to continue offering these free bonuses.

According to the Official PlayStation Blog,”PlayStation Plus Collection will End on May 9th – Claim Your Games Before the Deadline and Continue Playing with PlayStation Plus Membership.”

Getting the games in the PlayStation Plus Collection is an effortless process. To claim the games in the PlayStation Plus Collection, follow these steps:

  • Go to the PS Plus section on your PS5.
  • Select the “PS Plus Collection” option.
  • Choose the games you want.
  • Click “Add to Library.”

The PlayStation Plus Collection features a lineup of highly-regarded PS4 games, such as God of War, Batman: Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Resident Evil 7, The Last of Us Remastered, Until Dawn, Fallout 4, Days Gone, and Monster Hunter: World, and others. The PS Plus Collection, with its roster of top-rated PS4 games, is a significant draw for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

The PlayStation Plus Collection originally comprised 20 games, ten from Sony’s first-party studios and the other ten from third-party developers. In addition to the closure of the PlayStation Plus Collection, Sony also revealed the free games that will be available for PlayStation Plus subscribers in February 2023, which include Evil Dead: The Game, OlliOlliWorld, Mafia: The Definitive Edition, and Destiny 2: Beyond Light.

The updated version of the PlayStation Plus subscription service, which is structured to rival the Xbox Game Pass, was launched in the summer of 2022. PlayStation Plus is a subscription service that offers monthly access to various new, current, and classic PlayStation games and exclusive benefits such as beta access and other bonuses for PlayStation users.

The PS Plus Collection offers a diverse selection of games, featuring some of the most popular and highly-acclaimed titles on the PS4 system, such as God of War, Fallout 4, Mortal Kombat, Uncharted 4, Ratchet and Clank, Days Gone, Until Dawn, Detroit, Battlefield 1, Infamous Second Son, Batman Arkham Knight, The Last Guardian, The Last of Us Remastered, Resident Evil 7, Bloodborne, and Monster Hunter World. These games represent a mixture of first-party titles from Sony and third-party games from other developers.

The January PS Plus Essential package, which includes Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Fallout 76, and Axiom Verge 2, will only be available for acquisition until February 7th. The PS Plus Essential is the basic level of the three PS Plus membership options, and it provides subscribers with a limited number of games each month for free. Once obtained, players can play these games as long as they maintain their PS Plus subscription.

Jim Ryan, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, had yet to determine whether the PlayStation Plus Collection would expand beyond its current roster of games at the time of making the statement.

“We’ll wait to observe the response to the Plus Collection, to see which games are being played the most, before making any decisions,” stated Jim Ryan, CEO of SIE, in an interview with GQ.

Jim Ryan, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated that a subscription service like Xbox Game Pass would not match Sony’s strategy of developing expensive, in-house games. He sees the Plus Collection as a tool for acquiring new users and noted that for those who purchase a PS5 without owning a PS4, the collection essentially provides them with a PS4.

Sony is releasing its updated virtual reality headset, the PlayStation VR2, for the PS5 on February 22nd. Despite speculation that the sales of the $550 headset may not meet the company’s goals, Sony has attempted to address potential customer concerns and answer questions through a comprehensive FAQ.

Sony highlighted that players could play over 30 games during the first month of the launch of their next-gen virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 5. This includes the VR version of Horizon Call of the Mountain and VR modes for Resident Evil Village and Gran Turismo 7, which will be complimentary for players who already own the non-VR versions.

Sony’s attention is said to be directed towards developing the next PlayStation instead of a PS5 Pro. Meanwhile, the PSVR 2 is imminent, but its sales performance may need to meet Sony’s expectations.
