State-sponsored hackers from Russia, China, and Iran have reportedly been utilizing tools created by OpenAI, a company backed by Microsoft, to enhance their hacking tactics and deceive their targets, according to a report released on Wednesday.
Microsoft has identified hacking groups linked to Russian military intelligence, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, and the governments of China and North Korea using large language models, also known as artificial intelligence (AI), to produce responses that mimic human language. This revelation has prompted Microsoft to impose a comprehensive ban on state-backed hacking groups accessing its AI products.
Tom Burt, Microsoft’s Vice President for Customer Security, emphasized the company’s commitment to restricting access to its technology for identified threat actors. In an interview with Reuters, Burt highlighted Microsoft’s dedication to mitigating potential risks associated with the misuse of AI technology by such entities.
Diplomatic officials from Russia, North Korea, and Iran have not yet responded to requests for comment on the allegations, while China’s US embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu refuted the accusations, emphasizing China’s opposition to baseless accusations and advocating for the responsible deployment of AI technology for the benefit of humanity.
The disclosure of state-sponsored hackers leveraging AI tools to bolster their espionage capabilities raises concerns about the widespread adoption of AI and its vulnerability to exploitation.
