Mobile phone processors have come a long way now. It wasn’t long ago that intel announced a dual-core processor for its desktop systems. Today even the low-end smartphones have at least a quadcore CPU and 4 Gigabytes of RAM. That is the same as a high-end PC a few years back.
Snapdragon has been the reigning champion of Android smartphone processors for more than a decade now. Just like the PC processor domain was ruled by Intel for the past years, Snapdragon provides users with new technologies and increasing performance each year.
Today all the high-end devices irrespective of their manufacturer use Snapdragon chipset. The current top of the line model Snapdragon 865 powers most of the flagship phones of this year. This, however, is about to change as the company prepares to launch the next big product.
The news leaks suggest that this long-awaited processor will drop in the third quarter of the year. This is not the first time we have heard of this new chip. A while ago, this processor appeared on the AnTuTu benchmark and smashed the score set by the previous generation snapdragon 865.
This new processor set a score of 667,253 points as leaked on Weibo, the previous generation equipped phones scored a maximum of just above 600000 marks. This means that this update will bring a substantial amount of performance bump to the devices.
The new chipset will bring great features to the table. The higher benchmark score is enabled by, the higher clock processor. The new Snapdragon 865 features a 3.09 GHz processor as compared to the 2.8Ghz in the previous generation.
Hopefully, the new processor release will be the same as last year. This means that after the announcement, most of the flagships that will come out later this year with feature the newer model of the chipset. There are already a few smartphone specification leaks out there.
The 5G version of Galaxy Z Flip 2 will have the Snapdragon 865 Plus. Similarly, the first leak of the chipset came from Asus Rog Phone 3. It is safe to assume that this phone will be the first one to launch with Snapdragon 865 Plus because the previous model of this phone was the first one to launch with snapdragon 855 Plus.
Samsung is also going to launch other devices later this year. We already have reports of Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2 in plans. The two devices will have the latest snapdragon 865 Plus as well since both of these are upper-tier models. The performance of the new chipset in these devices will set the real benchmark.
There is also hope for people looking for portable Windows devices. It was recently announced by the company that they will also be releasing an upgraded Snapdragon 8cx chipset. This, however, will not be a significant overhaul but just higher clock speeds.
These higher clock speeds will enable newer portable laptops to perform slightly better than the last generation. We will see better emulation of windows app on these devices now. This lineup, unlike the smartphone versions, has a lot to go before it can compete with Intel-based systems.
Be sure to let us know in the comments which are the most exciting features you’re looking forward to in the next snapdragon release.
