Huawei recently unveiled a new smartphone in the “Mate Series” which is the best they have for now until the release of the P30 Pro. The all new Huawei Mate 20 Pro seems like the most underrated smartphone of 2018, tons of smartphones have been showcased recently that it is hard to catch up with every single one of them. But don’t worry as that is exactly where we come in, we are here to give our first impressions of the new stunning looking Huawei Mate 20 Pro. So without any delay let’s jump straight into it.
-
Design:
Taking a first look at the device I must say it looks really gorgeous in the gradient color which they call the Midnight blue but different from that of the P20 Pro. This variant is a mix of blue, purple and black. Design wise it looks like a cross between the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Huawei P20 Pro. It has got those curved edges around the display which you experience in Samsung smartphones. Also, the bezels are very sleek, there is a small notch cut out on the top of the display which is a norm these days. The front and back are made up of glass surrounded by aluminium fame chassis.
The volume rocker and the power button is placed on the right. You get a USB-C port at the bottom but no headphone jack. On the top of the device, you can find the sim card slot along with nano SD card slot for expandable storage. Flipping the device over and you can see this unusual triple camera setup packed in square dimension along with the flash.
The fingerprint scanner is neither placed at the back nor at the bottom of the display instead this time Huawei has gone for the in-display fingerprint scanner which is a bit slow as it is in its early stages compared to the standard ones but it actually helps in getting that symmetrical top and bottom bezel.

Display:
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro features a 6.39 inch OLED display having a resolution of 1440 x 3120 and pixel density of 538 ppi. The display supports HDR 10 vision so it is really amazing to enjoy media streaming on this device. The color reproduction and contrast levels are decent but not that great compared to the Samsung Galaxy S9 or Note 9. But this doesn’t mean that it is a bad display as the Samsung devices are on top of the display-game. The colors are a bit saturated in Huawei Phones but you can change it to your liking via the settings menu.

Specification:
The specifications are what you can expect from a 2018 flagship smartphone, it comes with 6 Gigabytes of RAM and 128 Gigabytes of internal storage. The phone is powered by Huawei’s own chipset which is HiSilicon Kirin 980 (7 nm process) having 8 cores, the GPU that you get is Mali-G76 MP10.
The performance of this device is really snappy thanks to the impressive hardware but it can be much faster in my opinion if it was running stock Android instead of Huawei heavy skinned Android OS. The phone is also IP68 certified water and dust resistance means it can hold up in 2 meters of water for 30 minutes. It is available in 5 color options including Emerald Green, Midnight Blue, Twilight, Pink Gold, Black.

Camera:
Now let’s get to my favorite part of this smartphone which is its triple camera setup on the back which is of Leica branding. The arrangement is similar to the P20 Pro which includes a primary 40 megapixel f/1.8, 27mm shooter which takes some really great night shots which is the best you can find on any smartphone thanks to the Pixel Bending technology.
Next to that is the 8 megapixels 3x optical zoom sensor featuring OIS for stable long distance shots. The third camera which used to be the monochrome sensor has been swapped out with an ultra-wide angle lens having a focal length of 16mm which is really great and I hope every manufacturer adopt it in their devices. It takes some really great shots with an impressive amount of details, color saturation and contrast. Moving on to the front camera of the device, you get a 24 megapixel f/2.0 shooter with a focal length of 26mm. It will help you capture really detailed looking selfies for your social media.

Battery:
Huawei Mate 20 Pro houses a 4200 mAh Li-Po battery which is 5% larger than the last year’s already huge pack in the Mate 10 Pro, still one of the longest lasting phones I have ever used. You get a 40 watts supercharger in the box that fast charges it from 0 to 70% in just 30 minutes.
Also, this time the phone features wireless charging and if that is not enough for you then it can also reverse charge other phones wirelessly by flipping a switch in the settings. Yes, that means your phone becomes a charging pad.

Early Verdict:
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a really impressive phone, it offers a really great camera setup and is one of the best phones to get your hands on in 2018. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference as there are tons of smartphones available in the market these days that offer the same specs for the most part.
Huawei does provide some unique features like super fast charging, big battery, pixel bending technology and ultra-wide angle lens which makes it a great device for the price. Tell us your opinion about it in the comments section below.
