Google announced the successors of the photogenic Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL, during their October Keynote. There are many “2018 updates” in the phone such as the glass now covers the whole back now thus enabling the wireless charging that was absent in the last pixels. The screen, battery, hardware all aspects of the smartphone experience have been updated. More on this in our early review of these devices. The topic for this article is to point out what we did not like on these new pixels, or should not have been in the device in the first place.
The Notch
Well, the notch is very obvious in the new pixel 3 XL. It is the biggest notch ever in the smartphone world; it is on such a scale that even if a standard notch found in the iPhones or OnePlus6 or the LG V40 does not bother you, this notch will definitely be sore on your smartphone experience. The implementation of the notch on the iPhone X, iPhone Xs is built into the UI, and there are benefits of the notch such as the face unlock hardware resides on that notch.
The primary purpose of the notch is to make sure that more and more space on the front of the phone is covered by the screen. If you look at the phones that were released at least two years ago had huge chins and foreheads, the new pixel 3 XL not only have the biggest notch but also the biggest chin.
Until now Google has not said anything about that huge Notch, they did not mention anything about the utility or the placement of the notch during their presentation was clever enough to hide the notch. They have the front boom box stereo speakers for an awesome sound experience. But is that a valid reason for such a ridiculous design? You are the one to decide.
Notch hiding
Even if you ignore the huge notch, most of the Android OEMs that have a Notch design have certain measures that can at the very least hide the notch and shift various icons on that black bar that is used to hide the notch. It not only makes your phone “dope” but also saves the screen space that can be used for many other purposes.
Additionally, the stock Android notification interface that most OEMs use as it is ignores the presence of the notch on the display. So, a Google display will behave the same, but if they try to do the same as what OnePlus has done with the notch on the OnePlus 6 and what LG is doing with the V40, then the problem will very much be a little ratified.
4GB Ram
The amount of memory in your phone decides how it will perform in your day to day tasks. It will make sure the apps that are open in the background stay open for you to utilize them at a later time. While the 4GB ram may not seem less as it is enough for a normal user. But a flagship device in 2018 that will make a huge dent in your wallet should be at least on par with its direct substitutes.
On IOS space where the OS is much more closed, and optimized 4GB ram is more than enough, while the Andriod OS is open and does not have as rigid optimizations as Apple puts on its devices. It is the reason why most of the flagship Android devices that are released in the current year have at least 6GB ram while jacked up variants also feature 8GB ram so that the users can have the optimal experience.
