Smartphones are growing day by day, and often we see designs aesthetics that are engineered in such a way that that the devices are ergonomically pleasing and at the same time designed such a way that we see the surprising advancement of technology. Last year the trend of all screen smartphone started, and we saw “crazy” implementation of technology and most notably the “notchified” iPhone X and following to it most Android OEMs such as OPPO and LG released their devices that have resemblances with the notch technique.
The notch in the smartphones got mixed reviews from the consumers and reviewers too. As a result, most OEMs specifically Chinese smartphone manufacturers started experimenting with all screen smartphones and in-screen fingerprint scanner. We saw VIVO’s in-screen fingerprint scanner last year, the idea was great, but it had its share of limitations. A few months back we saw VIVO apex the concept phone at the Mobile World Congress, and people awed the futuristic design aspects and the progress that the companies have made in a short while.
No one thought that the all screen concept phone would make its way to the market in the form of VIVO NEX this early, but the phone released a few days back in a custom event and is up for sales in the Asian market though the software in the test models did not seem complete. The question here is we recently got the almost all screen devices, and people are not completely aware of the advantages and disadvantages of these smartphones, and we are now getting a phone whose front is only covered with the display. The biggest improvement that I saw on this device is that the squared device morphed into a slim squeaky device that looks beautiful.
The headline feature of this device other than the flashy screen is how they managed to get the screen; the answer lies in the elevating camera design that the bigger smartphone manufacturers did not manage to put forth earlier.
The design can be thought of as an inspiration for not only smartphone manufacturers but also the laptop manufacturers as the bezel-less display trend has also surfaced into the laptop market and we have seen the camera on the chin of the displays like DELL XPS or more interestingly underneath a key in Huawei MateBook that display “beautiful up the nose pictures/videos”, the exact solution would not have been feasible since laptop displays are much slimmer but the same can be done is some other fashion however.
Coming back to the VIVO NEX the elevating camera or the all screen front is not only the defining feature of the phone, another technological frontier that VIVO put out the on-screen fingerprint scanner also magnifies the importance of the device according to VIVO.
The third generation of an on-screen fingerprint scanner is what the owners of this device will be getting that is 50 percent better in recognition and 10 percent faster in unlocking the device compared to the last gen found in VIVO X21. The new sensor does add significant improvement, but due to some odd reason they decided to restrict the area of the screen where you are to place your finger/thumb, I liked the bigger area found in VIVO X21.
The technology that will make it stand out in the league of many other devices is the pop-up selfie camera that allowed them to go for the all screen display.
The mechanics here is very simple, whenever you start the camera app or any other application in your phone that requires front-facing camera than the camera will pop up and do its work in no time and it will disappear, and you would not even notice the fact that there was a camera there in the first place. They were able to do that with the aid of carefully designed motors and Integrated Circuits on the hardware side and carefully designed algorithms to make them work in the software side. However, the camera here is not that good the 5MP sensor comes with VIVO’s assortment of “face beauty,” and AI features to enhance your selfies. If you are not into selfies that camera will never catch your eyes.
The other specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC that is coupled with the Adreno 616 GPU and 8GB of RAM for the flagship version that is NEX S and Snapdragon 710 SoC with Adreno 616 GPU and 6 GB of RAM for the NEX A version. The huge display comes with somewhat disappointing 1080p+ display even when most of the flagship Android phones have 1440p+ display.
Most importantly the price that you will be paying for this device in India the price is around 44k INR which is almost on par with the price of One Plus 6. However, there is no word on the release of the device in the US market if you direly want this device importing it will be the only solution.
