Hybrid, 2-in-1, fusion -call it what you may – we all want things that give us something extra and other than usual. We have seen hybrid automobiles, 2-in-1 kitchen appliances, personal use machines and a plethora of other everyday use items which offer us something extra and we love them.
When the first camera phone hit the markets, it was the most amazing amalgamation of technology. As this little piece of tech in our smartphones became more and more sophisticated, the need to carry a bulky camera around is almost non-existent now. The laptop industry too has followed suit and many industry leading brands have come up with hybrid laptops, so to say.
The Lenovo Yoga 920 is one such convertible, hybrid laptop which is a laptop and tablet in one. It has the design of a laptop along with the functionality of a tablet.
The Lenovo 920 is a sequel to an earlier Yoga 910 laptop with upgrades such as changed location of the webcam, longer battery life, a Windows Precision touchpad, Thunderbolt 3 and an active pen. This laptop is not just a bunch of upgrades from its older model. It is a complete package. Although it is towards the higher end in terms of price, it provides some of the best features combined in one machine, apart from being a 2-in-1!
Design
The Yoga 920 comes in colors such as Copper, Bronze metallic and platinum. It is 0.55-inches thick and 3-pounds heavy. Just as the MacBook Pro has the Touch Bar and Dell laptops have their odd camera placement, the Lenovo 920 has a signature hinge. The design allows the Yoga 920’s screen to fold completely all the way back and convert the laptop into a tablet. The metallic mesh-like hinge hides the ventilation system of the laptop perfectly. It comes with a 13.9-inch touchscreen.
The metallic finish all around makes it look tough and sturdy. Nowhere in terms of design will you find the Yoga 920 flawed. It is an excellent machine that not only works great but also has the requisite looks to be considered one of the best laptops in the market.
Active Pen
The Active Pen that comes as an added and optional accessory with the Lenovo Yoga 920 is a really useful add-on to this already amazing package. This pen makes you feel like you’re writing on paper and saves your screen from getting unnecessary fingerprint marks. It can be used in the tablet mode or even in Tent mode.
Although it is a very useful accessory, the Yoga 920 fails aesthetically when it comes to storing the pen. A plastic clip that is inserted into the laptop’s USB 3.0 port acts as a holder for the pen. This not only blocks the USB port and renders it useless but also blocks the power button. The Pen is also a hurdle in this position if you’re trying to fit your laptop into a laptop carrier or bag.
Therefore, the storage of the Active Pen is not ideal and is rather inconvenient.
Keyboard
The keyboard in the Lenovo Yoga 920 is backlit with three settings to choose from: off, bright or it can be dimmed. This gives something to all types of users. The freedom to choose is a great feature of the keyboard. Although the keys on this keyboard come with less travel as compared to other Lenovo laptops, they are quite sturdy and otherwise comfortable to use.
Touchpad
All methods of input in the Lenovo Yoga 920 work like a breeze. They’re user friendly and show no signs of lag or any other kind of malfunction. The touchpad is no exception.
On the normal sensitivity setting, the touchpad shows no sign of multi-touch input lag. Its seamless functionality is just one of the many great features of the Lenovo Yoga 920. The cursor won’t move if you accidently touch it with your palm during typing.
Processor
The Lenovo Yoga 920 is loaded with Intel’s eighth-generation Intel core processor. This is the newest line of processors from Intel and having them in the Yoga 920 laptops just adds to the already excellent list of features this laptop has.
This processor makes multitasking a breeze and is great for running heavy apps. It ensures battery conservation. Intel’s Core i7-8500U chip inside the Yoga 920 is clocked at 1.80 GHz, with an 8GB RAM and a fast NVMe 256GB solid state drive.
Display
The Yoga 920 comes equipped with a 1,080 resolution full HD display with an option of upgrading to a 4k display. Although its pixel density and glossy surface resulting in glare is nothing to write home about but its contrast, brightness and colors are quite cool. You can perfectly and comfortably view the screen from any angle. The webcam above the screen is suitable for video calls. Most smartphone cameras are better than its webcam though when it comes to image clarity.
Battery Life
The feature that makes the Lenovo Yoga 920 an extra-ordinary laptop is its amazing and unbelievable battery life! You just cannot drain it out faster. This is great for heavy users and users who have to travel and work a lot. This laptop is meant for you. The screen and the processor contribute to this amazing feature.
Ports, Speakers and Fingerprint Sensor
The Yoga 920 has three ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The ports include a USB 3.0 port and two Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports. The two USB-C ports can be used to charge the Yoga 920 via the included 65-watt USB-C power adapter. As opposed to the MacBook Pro the Yoga 920 has both USB-A and C type ports.
There are two JBL speakers placed at the front underside of the laptop with excellent sound quality. Although this placement contributes to the loud and clear sound of the speakers in Tent mode, the downside is they might get obstructed if the laptop is not lying on a flat surface such as on a bed.
The fingerprint sensor placed on the far right side of the laptop works great with Windows. It is definitely slower than the MacBook Pro’s Touch ID system.
Other Features
Both WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1 wireless connectivity options are available. Lenovo offers a standard one-year warranty. The laptop also has a system reset pinhole on the right edge along with its USB 3.0 port and power button.
Final Verdict
The Lenovo Yoga 920 is form and functionality provided in a single device. The appealing design is as much attractive as the list of excellent features it has. These coupled with an eighth-generation Intel Core processor and an unbelievable battery life makes this 2-in-1 convertible laptop a must-have!
