Laptops can never deliver the same performance as that of their desktop counterparts, but with the portability they offer, it is worth giving up on a bit of power. Still, when it comes to laptops it is hard to find a laptop capable of offering performances at least on average that of desktops. This is because laptops have to have a comprise between battery life and performance amongst other things, especially limited space for hardware.
Though, the Acer Predator Triton 7000 is one such laptop which goes beyond your everyday needs and can work as a complete substitute for a high-performance rig as well.
Not only this but with GPU prices soaring high due to their increased demand courtesy cryptocurrency miners, it is quite difficult to get a good GPU for your desktop. Therefore, with integrated GPUs on a laptop, it is an added bonus for gamers who don’t want to spend extra to get their hands on a GPU. The integrated GPUs by Nvidia of the Max-Q design are really impressive. We all know that Nvidia is a GPU Giant and this laptop has a really good integrated Nvidia GPU.
Fully Loaded Specs
The laptop is a dream come true for gamers. It is portable yet very high powered at the same time. The laptop has an Intel Core i7 7th generation processor, which is quite fast especially because the processor is a 7700 HQ one instead of the common ‘u’ processors for laptops. Not only this but with a whopping 16 GB of RAM, you are totally future proof for at least 3 years or more. All the complex stuff and algorithms required for gaming and other software can be handled very well by this laptop’s processor.
On top of this, the Nvidia’s Max-Q design GTX 1080 graphics card is there for the gamer’s delight. Thus, you are assured of running the latest games without a hassle. Also, since for a good gaming experience, a quality screen matters, this laptop has got you covered once again. With its 15.6-inch 120 Hz FHD panel (1920×1080 pixels) which is also G-sync compatible, by the way, you can enjoy crisp video quality and a great gaming experience with much brighter colors.
Though, the storage seems a bit less, since it is only 1 TB which is now the norm these days. With game file size increasing day by day, your hard drive can be quickly filled in a matter of time if you are a hardcore gamer. Therefore, we would advise you to replace your hard drive if you think it won’t be enough. Though, if you don’t require that much space then doesn’t replace since this 1 TB is possible by a combination of two hard drives which are in RAID thus causing an increase in performance. Although, we did expect an SSD on this laptop whatever floats our boat.
On the contrary, the international variant has 32 GB of RAM and even less hard drive space; 512 GB. The ports aren’t a problem since they are sufficient. The laptop has 4 USB-A ports. Two of these are the USB 3.0 ones while there is also a USB Type C port. There is also a Display Port as well as an HDMI one.
Build Quality isn’t that good though
The plastic bends, and the metal quality is very thin, though that may be to make it slimmer and portable. Therefore, for a gaming laptop are usually heavier this one might be the most portable one. The keyboard and trackpad layout is very different from the usual laptops though. Their places are interchanged. There doesn’t seem to be a good reason for doing this. This hampers your typing speed since there isn’t much space to rest your palm on.
Furthermore, with the trackpad far ahead, it is much difficult to use. Though, if you are a gamer, you would obviously be using a gaming mouse rather than a trackpad, so a compromise does exist of sorts.
Another thing which we would like to point out that these are mechanical keys which make noise when pressed. They don’t certainly feel that way like the Mac or Thinkpad keyboards do. The trackpad which is a glass one doesn’t really track well either. Not only this, but the trackpad doesn’t even have a right click button. Therefore, you would have to get yourself accustomed to the double tap to right click method. On top of this, neither this nor the swipe gestures “always” work.
Maybe Acer did this all just to make the laptop thinner and portable.
Battery life is good
For a gaming laptop which is supposed to very high powered, it is obvious it would consume energy much faster too. Therefore, battery life is an important thing to look at while purchasing a gaming laptop. This laptop though stands out since the battery life is currently the best out amongst the gaming laptops. Usually, while gaming, the batteries of most laptops usually last just a matter of 30 to 40 minutes.
What makes this laptop impressive is that it offered a whole hour of gaming time, while Doom was being played on it. The average battery life of this laptop would be 2 hours, which is decent enough considering the features it has.
Display
The display isn’t really that impressive still considering the price tag. Yes, a 15.6-inch display that’s running at 1080p (FHD) and supports G-Sync at 120 Hz is really good, but you could have expected this laptop to have 4K UHD, HDR, 240 Hz, or at least wide-gamut support. Though sadly it doesn’t. With double the refresh rate as compared to normal computer’s, there isn’t any motion blur or input lag. This ensures a steady experience of gaming.
Price
With that said, the most important issue is the laptop’s price. Available for a price tag of $2999, the laptop isn’t really cheap. Though the laptop has packed with features, these features still don’t account for such a hefty price tag. Moreover, with the build quality not that good and the laptop’s layout being drastically different from the usual laptops, it will take a while to get accustomed to.
Therefore, we won’t advise you to spend your three thousand dollars on this laptop, when for the same price, you can get a much gaming experience on a desktop. Though, if portability is your concern, then we can’t really stop you from buying this laptop since it is one of the best out there.
