US politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also known as AOC made her Twitch debut yesterday as her campaign to encourage people to vote. Apparently, she has a lot of people that follow her and she became instantly famous on Twitch as well. She played Among Us, a trending multiplayer game right now on Twitch. Just in the first match, her stream peaked at about 435,000 viewers according to twitch, which is huge.
It is great to see politicians using newer mediums to actively engage with and encourage people to cast their votes. Games and streaming are a big medium right now so it wasn’t long before we saw these people making their way to them. This surely wasn’t the first time though, last week the Biden campaign debuted an Animal Crossing island. A year before now Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) joined Twitch in order to reach potential audiences. According to him, he wanted to find a “potentially supportive audience that we may not be hitting other ways.”
Coming back to Ocasio-Cortez’s stream the insane amount of viewers she had puts her stream among the 20 biggest streams ever. however, Ninja still holds the record for the highest views of an individual streamer. With more than 600,000 viewers during a Fortnite match with Drake in 2018. AOC’s position was determined using a third-party ranking website TwitchTracker. It will count even higher if you only consider individual streamers. She is surely in the top ten highest viewed twitch streamers of all time.
This proves how big the streaming platform has become now. Although it is primarily used for gaming around the world. This is a proper demonstration of how we can use these platforms to reach other audiences as well. Twitch has become increasingly popular for other contentment creators than gamers such as musicians and travel bloggers.

The Stream:
AOC posted a question on Twitter this Monday asking, “Anyone want to play Among Us with me on Twitch to get out the vote?” Some of the major Twitch streamers quickly signed up to play with her and the stream was all set. The people to join her in the stream were Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Pokimane, HasanAbi, Disguised Toast, DrLupo, and some others.
Anyone want to play Among Us with me on Twitch to get out the vote? (I’ve never played but it looks like a lot of fun)

After she tweeted about her plan to stream on Twitch her supporters also made graphics for her stream which we could see in the stream. In addition to the main cause for the stream, Ocasio-Cortez was pretty good at among us as well. She posted on Monday that he had never played the game before but we could see in the stream that she did brush up her skills before streaming. Therefore, she did fairly well in her first-ever stream.
Talking more about the game. She was chosen as an impostor in the first round. Fortunately, she had a good partner who knocked out about half the people before getting caught. Later in the game, Omar made it to the final three as an impostor before getting voted out by Ocasio-Cortez and Hasan.
To sum it up was great seeing her coming on a new platform and interacting with the people there. We can surely hope to see more of AOC on Twitch very soon.
