AMD is set to bring its RDNA 3 graphics technology to laptops in 2023, with promises of desktop-level performance comparable to NVIDIA’s RTX 3060 GPU. The company’s new Radeon RX 7600M XT GPUs are said to enable high frame rates in popular games such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (100fps in 1080p resolution), Borderlands 3 (106fps), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (142fps).
The ASUS TUF Gaming A16 Notebook has been released and features one of the first RDNA 3 GPUs optimized for laptops. This GPU is the AMD Radeon RX 7600S, based on the “RDNA 3” architecture. Notebookcheck, a technology review website, has obtained the ASUS TUF Gaming A16 Notebook and has likely conducted tests on the device’s performance, features, and overall value. This new GPU is expected to provide desktop-level graphics performance to laptops and could significantly boost gaming and graphics processing capabilities.
At the CES 2023, AMD mainly discussed the Zen 4 X3D processors, but the company also announced mobile versions of its RDNA 3 GPUs, indicating some news for PC enthusiasts. While only a portion of the GPU lineup has been revealed, the rest is expected to be showcased later this year at Computex. It is expected that laptops equipped with these RDNA 3 GPUs will be available soon.
In the first test of the ASUS TUF Gaming A16, the laptop was subjected to the 3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Benchmark, resulting in a score of 25900 points in Turbo and 25514 points in standard mode. The test revealed that the AMD Radeon RX 7600S GPU in the A16 provided superior performance compared to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 mobile GPU found in the HP Envy 16 and ASUS Tuf Gaming F15 laptops, with a maximum improvement of 13% in the Turbo mode configuration.
The Radeon RX 7600M XT comes with 8 GB of VRAM operating at 18 Gbps, a 128-bit bus, 32 CUs (equivalent to 2,048 stream processors), a boost clock of 2.3 GHz, 32 MB of Infinity Cache, a maximum TGP of 120 Watts, and AV1 encode/decode support. Nvidia states that the Radeon RX 7600M XT delivers up to 31% faster performance than the GeForce RTX 3060 in 1080p gaming. On the other hand, the Radeon RX 7600M has the same amount of VRAM but with slower 16 Gbps modules, a lower CU count of 28, and a maximum TGP of 90 Watts.
The AMD Radeon RX 7600S and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 showed similar gaming performance, with the 3060 coming out slightly ahead. Some reviewers noted that the RX 7600S felt similar to existing Radeon RX 6700S or RX 6800S models. Nevertheless, the RX 7600S delivered a better performance at a comparable TDP to the RTX 3060, indicating improved energy efficiency.
AMD’s recent CES 2023 presentation was mainly focused on its Zen 4 X3D processors, but the company also had news for PC enthusiasts with the announcement of mobile versions of its RDNA 3 GPUs. Although only a part of the lineup has been unveiled, the remaining models are anticipated to be shown at Computex later this year. The laptops featuring the mentioned RDNA 3 GPUs are expected to be released soon.

The gaming performance of the AMD Radeon RX 7600S and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 were comparable, with the 3060 slightly outperforming overall. Reviewers mentioned that the RX 7600S had a similar feel to the existing Radeon RX 6700S or RX 6800S parts. However, The RX 7600S demonstrated better performance at an equivalent TDP to the RTX 3060, suggesting superior energy efficiency.
The peak power consumption of the AMD Radeon RX 7600S RDNA 3 GPU was 70 watts, with the GPU and GPU hot spot temperatures reaching 80°C and 85°C, respectively, during testing, respectively, during the Furmark test. The GPU clock rate reached a maximum of 2400 MHz but averaged around 1.5 GHz during the stress test. The new RDNA 3 GPUs are expected to be available with the latest laptops in the first half of 2023. However, NVIDIA has already made their mainstream GeForce RTX 40 laptops available for pre-order, giving them an early advantage in the market.
According to Furmark, the AMD Radeon RX 7600S RDNA 3 GPU had a maximum power consumption of 70W while reaching temperatures of 80°C GPU and 85°C GPU hot spot. During the stress test, the clock rate peaked at 2400 MHz but averaged around 1.5 GHz. AMD intends to release its RDNA 3 GPUs in 2023 with the latest laptops, while NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 40 laptops have an edge in market availability as their mainstream alternatives are now available for pre-order.
The official prices of the latest AMD graphics cards from the RX 7000 series are $999 for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and $899 for the Radeon RX 7900 XT.
The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is expected to compete directly with NVIDIA’s high-end RTX 4080 graphics card, priced at $1200. In comparison, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is $200 cheaper, which could be an attractive option for consumers who want to save money while still getting a powerful graphics card.
On another side, the Radeon RX 7900 XT does not have a direct competitor at the same price point, at least for the time being. This is an advantage for AMD in market positioning, as it provides customers with a more affordable option in the high-end GPU market.
